Handcrafted in Takayama, Nara Prefecture—Japan’s most celebrated region for chasen (tea whisk) production—this exceptional whisk is made by master artisan Inoue Wakasa using time-honored techniques passed down for centuries. Each of the 120 prongs is carefully split and shaped by hand from a single piece of high-quality Japanese bamboo, a process requiring immense precision and skill.

The result is a durable, high-performance whisk that produces a fine, creamy foam—ideal for preparing ceremonial-grade matcha. Though its size may be better suited for those with a strong grip, its superior balance and quality make it a favorite among experienced tea practitioners.

The tradition of Takayama chasen dates back to the Muromachi period, when a whisk was first made by the second son of the Takayama castle lord at the request of tea master Murata Jukō. The piece was later presented to Emperor Go-Tsuchimikado and named “Takaho.” The secret crafting method was passed down through generations as a one-heir tradition, now preserved by 16 artisans across centuries.

Today, Takayama remains Japan’s foremost chasen village, where every whisk is a work of living tradition—hand-cut, hand-shaped, and designed to elevate every tea experience.
